The road to Sodom

                                                             printable view

YOU'VE heard the story of how the Lord destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by raining down fire and brimstone upon them. The inhabitants of those two cities became so vile before the Lord until he just couldn't tolerate them anymore, so he destroyed them. I want to tell you about some of the events that took place before the day of destruction.

Both Sodom and Gomorrah were world-class thriving cities in the eyes of the world. Sodom in particular was admired for its fast living and cutting-edge lifestyles. Gomorrah was a haven for merchants and for those with goods to peddle.

These were very popular places and people came from near and far to be a part of the culture of unabashed liberties. Both Sodom and Gomorrah were trend-setters when it came to new ideas and progressive thinking. Things that were utterly unthinkable or taboo in other places were considered acceptable and common in both of those cities.

The thing that attracted the multitudes was the allure of freedom. One could do all the things one dreamed of doing and not have to worry about answering to any authority. Therefore, Sodom and Gomorrah attracted those looking to break out and start living without restrictions.

They were the original sin cities and they were beloved by many. Even Lot, the nephew of Abraham lived in Sodom. I'm sure Abraham had a conversation or two with him about the quality of the place but he continued to live there.

Lot knew the place was bad but he wanted to live there because it was fashionable. Lot had two sons-in-law that were part of the in-crowd and they didn't want to hear anything about right and wrong.

They were living the cosmo lifestyle and they reveled in it.

Why did the Lord take such offense against those two particular cities? The world wasn't perfect and neither were the inhabitants of those two cities, so why single them out? The answer can be found by looking to Lot and his family. Lot was a descent guy who was married and raised two daughters in Sodom. Being a parent in Sodom wasn't easy. Lot, if judged by today's standards, would be classified as an upper-class man; he had the means to leave Sodom for a more family friendly place if he wanted to.

Lot and all the decent folk learned how to coexist with the culture of rampant sin an lawlessness. They just built their fences higher and made their locks stronger in order to enjoy the fruits of the place.

They adapted to Sodom's culture and that is what made the Lord do what he did. The Lord doesn't like it when good people compromise and try to coexist with sin; especially those good people who have been truly blessed. The environment had gotten to the point where criticizing the corruption and lewdness that was running rampant made you look strange and out of touch.

The environment Satan spawned in Sodom and Gomorrah was designed to remove all threat of the Lord from the hearts of the inhabitants. Without the fear of the Lord it is impossible to worship him. If you know the Lord but has lost the ability to fear him, Satan has deceived your mind in the same manner he deceive those in Sodom and Gomorrah. He does this by trumping everything that equates to reverence with the allures of the flesh. In other words, he causes you to be so preoccupied with vain things until you forget the extent of your relation with your creator.
