Surviving the tax cuts

                                                             printable view

A tax cut is a reduction in the rate of tax imposed by a government. Whether a given tax cut will increase or decrease total tax revenues is often discussed and debated by both economists and politicians. The debate is just that, a never ending debate. In the meantime, the demand for revenue is real and government as we used to know it has become a thing of the past.

Someone once said "an end to government as we know it", now I see what they were talking about. State and local Government is in a desperate condition now that the federal government has had to rethink revenue gets distributed.

The federal government was once a nice feeding troth for the states. As the federal government grew, the state budgets grew too.

The federal government had lots of wealth to spread to the states before the feds had to resort to tax cuts. The revolt against the feds that started in the eighties which resulted in an alarming rise in anti-government militia groups, caused the feds to take evasive maneuvers designed to save its butt.

The feds decided to look out for number one and let the states take care of themselves when it comes to tax revenue. In other words, right wing radical groups who thought the government was too big and powerful, caused the feds to hang the states out to dry.

So the states are on their own now, with very little help from the feds when it comes to state budgets. Rather than make the hard choices when it comes to the budget, government has chosen to take the back-door route and implement a rash of scourge taxes disguised as no-new-tax budget solutions.

Raising taxes will get you shown to the door quicker than anything else if you are a politician. On the other hand, government foot dragging drives the people crazy when it comes to things like natural disasters and the nation's infrastructure.

Everybody's got one of their hands out to the government, and the other they have balled into a fist, poised to strike government.

However, since government is so in love with government, it has lost all perception of what is real verses that

which is an illusion. It can't face the reality that it is limited in power and inefficient at best, and that is on its good days.

Politicians make up government, so it is they who must be viewed as the harlots here. Their coyness and cunning nature coupled with their inability to know shame makes them a natural fit for the role.

Harlots deal in smooth talk based on a lot of promises. In the end, harlots often leave you worst off than you were before you were enticed by their smooth talk. Politicians have resorted to dealing in smooth talk based on a lot of promise.

Politicians today are very skilled at painting a rosy picture about some legislation that can't be measured until long after they have left office. They claim victory in battles that have yet to be fought, and expect to be praised in the process. The

harlot nature of a politician comes to the forefront when they harp about what they are going to do for you and how better off you will be if they can have their way; even though, they know in their heart, what they're proposing would qualify as a deceitful and shameful act if all the facts were known.

None of this is necessary and only makes the problems worse.

Trying to make up for lost federal revenue is something that should have been handled differently in the beginning. It should have been brought to the attention of the voters immediately.

Instead, the whole process of making up the lost revenue has become an exercise in coward taxes. Coward as in, afraid to say "we need to raise taxes or cut services" to make of for the shortfall from the federal government. That would have been the sensible way to approach the problem, but no, they saw an opportunity to go after the low-hanging fruit, and that is what they did.

That decision resulted in fees, lots of fees, along with huge increases in property and personal taxes. The gambling business got into the act and got a lot of the laws that prohibit and regulate gambling tossed out, by promising to share their revenue with the state. In fact, the gambling business was suppose to be the silver bullet that solved all the public school, and emergency services budget woes.
